Word of the Day: Site Tree
When logged into the CMS of your website, you'll find your "site tree" displayed on the left. Like any good tree, this one comes with a set of branches.
Your "tree" organization will mimic your website organization. Each section of your site has it's own page. If a section has multiple pages within it, they'll be shown as a “branch” with a plus sign (+) to the left of the icon. Click on the plus sign to view or hide these additional pages. (Note: When the underlying pages are in view, they'll be slightly indented to the right.)
If you click on the icon, you will be provided with a list of options you can perform on that page, such as "Edit" or "Create A Document Here."
Tips & Tricks
Help Your "Site Tree" Branch Out
You can add pages to your site one of two ways:
A. Duplicate a current page or
B. Create a page from scratch
To duplicate an existing page:
- In the site tree, locate the page and one of the pages under it.
- Click the icon next to that underlying page and in the menu that appears.
- Select "Duplicate Document."
- You will receive a popup message for you to confirm your request. Be aware that if you duplicate a section, all underlying pages will be duplicated too.
- The duplicated page will appear in the right showing its "page data."
- Click on the "edit" button above the "page data" on the right.
- Update the title, document alias, then enter and style the content.
- Be sure to check or uncheck the "Show in menu" button as needed.
- Click on the "Page Settings" tab and click the "Published?" button.
- Save the page and test.
To create a page from scratch:
- In the site tree, locate the page that you want your new page to appear under.
- Click the icon next to that page (the main "branch").
- Select "Create document here" from the dropdown list.
- The new page will show up ready to edit on the right.
Note: the page will not appear in the "site tree" until it is saved. - Create the page title and enter and style content.
Note: the document alias will be created automatically when you save the page. - Make sure your new page uses the appropriate template.
- Follow steps 8-10 above.
Extra Tips: If a page is listed in the site tree as grey and italic, it is not set to be "Published" or to "show in menu." If the page appears as grey, it IS "Published" but not set to "show in menu."
Features:
Sharing is Caring
With a little planning and programming, you can give your audience a variety of simple ways to share the information from your site. And while they're sharing, they’re building your brand and your audience.
• Print: Make it easy for the web browsers out there to print off the information they want by providing a "printer-friendly" button. They click, they print, they're happy.
• E-mail: Make it easy for people to pass along information from your website by adding the "e-mail a friend" function.
• Share: Don't stop at e-mail. These days, people are using all kinds of platforms to share information. You can support the cause (and generate added interest in your site) by letting people share content on their social networks like Facebook, MySpace and Twitter.
