Value Your Business

Success begins with believing in what you do!

Why are you in business? Seriously, I’d like to know.
Is it your passion? Is it your identity? Is it a place to kill time?

Do you love what you do? If not, why are you still doing it? Life is short, my friend! Get off your duff and make some changes!

OK, my rant is done. Let’s get back to this business of being in business.

How you feel about your business reflects in the way you portray it to others. If you hate what you do, prospective customers will pick up on that emotion and will probably avoid you like the plague. If you love your life, your business has a much higher chance of being ridiculously magnetic.

So let’s fish or cut bait, by thinking long and hard about what you do and more importantly, WHY you do it.

You can have the coolest, most innovative, kick-tail product or service on the planet, but unless you believe in it from the top of your head to the souls of your feet, you’ll have a hard time generating enough customer excitement to make it a viable business.

Let’s, for example, say you rent out port-a-johns to construction sites and outdoor events. You know, those green-door, plastic wonders you don’t give one or two thoughts about until you need one desperately. At first glance, it might be a challenge to imagine owning/operating a business such as this. The hours might stink (sorry, I had to), the clientele might be full of crapola (hey, I’m on a roll here), and you probably won’t receive a sack full of thank you notes or a parade in your honor.

But just imagine life without port-a-johns. Parks and campgrounds would be a disaster. Outdoor concerts, marathons, and county fairs would be borderline disgusting. When it comes down to it, the world needs this service, which makes it a significantly important business to own.

Every successful business usually fills one or more of the following needs:

  • It helps people reach a personal goal.
  • It makes life easier in one way or another.
  • It makes people more confident about their surroundings, and less fearful about the unexpected.
  • It gives people a leg-up on their perceived competition.

Think of your business as improving the world, by benefiting the people who share it with you. Form a mental image of your business as an essential component of what keeps all of humankind connected and moving forward.
